Rush

2. Rush—A Windrush Anthem (2021)
Des Oliver (Composer & Lyricist)
Choir: Pegasus Opera Company World Chorus
Choirmaster: Themba Mvula
Artistic Director: Alison Buchanan
Film: Black Apron Entertainment

The project was in collaboration with LOWD (Legacy of Windrush Descendants) and Just Purple Presents

This was a project in collaboration with Pegasus Opera Company during lockdown. The commission was for their online community world chorus. Because of social distancing, each individual choir member recorded their vocal part on a laptop or smartphone.

The musical and lyrical content came directly out of Des' conversations with the community choir over zoom. The choir is truly international, made up of participants from all over the world. Many of its members are Windrush descendants, and members of the Windrush generation.

'What was revealed by that conversation, is the dichotomy that lies at the heart of the Windrush experience, between the desire to see that story told through a lens of hopefulness, triumph, resilience and achievement, and, on the other, to acknowledge and recognise the struggles of that generation?'—Des Oliver

Since its premiere, Oliver's Windrush anthem has been distributed to schools across Lambeth and been performed across the country, notably as part of the Caribbean Jubilee celebrations in Bedfordshire during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee 2022. The project received national attention and was featured on Channel 4 news.
