Thomas Sanderling is a German conductor. His father, Kurt Sanderling, was permanent conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Thomas was appointed Music Director of the Halle Opera at the age of 24. By his mid-twenties, Thomas was already conducting orchestras such as the Dresden Staatskapelle and Leipzig Gewandhaus, and at the Komische Oper Berlin. His premiere recording of Shostakovich’s Michelangelo Suite was such a success that, shortly after its release, he became assistant to both Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein.
In the early 1980s, Sanderling became permanent guest conductor of the Deutsche Staatsoper, and made his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper conducting The Magic Flute (“A Mozart full of mysteries...Astonishing!”, Wiener Kurier) and The Marriage of Figaro. Thomas Sanderling has recorded the Brahms Symphonies with the Philharmonia and won an OPUS KLASSIK award for recroding Tchaikovsky with the LSO. Thomas has recorded Shostakovich's second violin concerto with the LSO and Krill Gerstein as well as performing Shostakovich concerto with Maxim Vengerov.
Thomas Sanderling has conducted many of the world’s finest orchestras and opera companies, including the Baltimore Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, The Hallé, London Philharmonic, NDR Elphilharmonie, Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Oslo Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, St Petersburg Philharmonic, WDR Symphony. In the world of opera Thomas Sanderling has conducted all over the world inclduing the Deutsche Oper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Hamburg State Opera, Mariinsky Theatre, Finnish National Opera and Teatro La Fenice.
From the summer of 2017 until March 2022.Thomas Sanderling was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recently had invitations for 2025 across Europe with orchestras such as ONDIF in Paris and many orchestras across Germany to conduct Shostakovich works next season in the composer's anniversary year. Thomas conducted Symphony Number 8 with Philharmonie Cologne in 2024.
